Florence is one of the oldest cities near Omaha, Nebraska. Located North of the city and situated on the Missouri Rover bordering to the east of Florence, it is regarded as “the historic front door to Omaha as well as the state.” Incorporated by the Nebraska Territorial Legislature on March 10, 1857. The town of Florence was named for one Miss Florence Kilbourn.
One of the most famous sites in the Omaha area is the Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. It is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. With a mission and focus on conservation, education, and research, it is also a special place for recreation for anyone that visits. Named by TripAdvisor as the World’s Best Zoo, Henry Doorly Zoo won over other famous zoos such as the San Diego Zoo and the Loro Parque.
Featuring one of the largest cat complexes in North America, it also boasts the world’s largest nocturnal exhibit and indoor swamp. From the Lied Jungle to the Desert Dome, Henry Doorly Zoo surpasses the scope of almost all other zoos with the largest indoor rainforest, desert, and geodesic domes in all of the world. This zoo should be on everyone’s to-do-list when visiting Florence near Omaha.
